China Tours for Wheelchair Users & Limited Mobility Travellers

An Honest Assessment

We want to be upfront: China's accessibility infrastructure is improving but still lags behind Australia. Not every attraction can accommodate wheelchair users, and some of China's most iconic sites present genuine challenges for travellers with limited mobility. However, with the right planning, tour selection, and a private tour format, a meaningful China experience is absolutely possible.

Accessible Attractions

Good accessibility: The Terracotta Warriors museum has ramps, flat paths, and wheelchair access throughout. Most modern museums and galleries in Beijing and Shanghai are fully accessible. The Yangtze River cruise ships have accessible cabins and lift access between decks. Shanghai's Bund promenade is flat and wide. Most 4-star+ hotels have accessible rooms and lifts.

Partial accessibility: The Forbidden City is mostly flat but extremely large — wheelchair users can access key areas but not all courtyards. Chengdu Panda Base has paved paths but some inclines; shuttle carts are available. Classical Chinese gardens have some stepped areas but main paths are navigable.

Challenging: The Great Wall is the most difficult major attraction. Even the most accessible section (Badaling) has steep inclines and uneven steps. Cable cars provide access to the wall itself, but walking on the wall is challenging for wheelchair users. Zhangjiajie and Tibet present significant elevation and terrain challenges.

Private Tour: Essential for Accessibility

For travellers with wheelchair or limited mobility needs, a private tour is essential rather than optional. Your guide plans each day around accessibility requirements. Your dedicated vehicle provides door-to-door transport. You can skip inaccessible sites and spend more time at accessible ones. Your guide identifies accessible routes, entrances, and facilities at each attraction.

How to Discuss Your Needs

Contact our team before booking to discuss your specific mobility situation. Be specific about your needs — wheelchair user, walking stick, limited distance, stairs difficult, etc. We will provide an honest assessment of which tours and attractions can accommodate you and which alternatives we can offer.

We would rather give you an honest "this site won't work for you" before booking than have you discover it on arrival. That honesty is part of our commitment to a genuine travel experience.
