tourism • 18 March 2026
The Australia-China Tourism Forum, held in Melbourne on March 18, reported that Australian visitor numbers to China reached 485,000 in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time. Projections for 2026 suggest numbers could exceed 550,000. Key growth drivers cited include the expanded visa-free transit policy, increased direct flight capacity, and improved digital payment options for foreign visitors. Group tours remain the most popular format for Australian travellers to China, accounting for approximately 62% of leisure visits. The forum also highlighted emerging destinations beyond Beijing and Shanghai, with Chengdu, Zhangjiajie, and Guilin seeing the strongest growth in Australian visitor interest. Tour operators noted particular demand for itineraries combining iconic landmarks with natural scenery.
