tourism • 23 October 2026

China is seeing strong growth in international tourism, with **visa-free entries reaching nearly 9 million in the third quarter of 2026**, up 24.1% year on year. China.org.cn reports that foreign nationals made 23.27 million border crossings during the period, while visa-free entry accounted for 77.5% of all foreign arrivals.[3] For Australian travellers, the trend highlights China’s increasingly streamlined visitor experience. China has expanded unilateral visa-free access to travellers from 50 countries, with eligible visitors generally able to stay for up to 30 days, while selected transit arrangements now allow stays of up to 240 hours. Major attractions are also introducing multilingual AI tourism assistants, and mobile-payment services are becoming easier for overseas visitors to use.[3] China’s 2026–2030 tourism plan aims to attract 190 million inbound tourist visits annually by 2030, suggesting continued investment in international visitor services, transport and destination infrastructure.[3] Australian travellers should check current entry requirements, passport validity, permitted stay periods and payment arrangements before departure, as eligibility can vary by nationality, itinerary and purpose of travel.
